Through this project, the NGO ACPE aims to reduce the pressure on forest ecosystems.
This project is the pilot phase of a programme that will be implemented throughout the Kasangulu sector, in the province of Kongo-Central. It is carried out as part of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.
The primary purpose of the project is to introduce 100 households in the village of Mpangala to the planting of melliferous species and fruit trees over an area of 150 hectares, with the aim of restoring the forest cover that has been decimated by the abusive exploitation of natural resources and environmentally destructive practices. The project also aims to promote diversification of the local community's sources of income in order to reduce the pressure on forest ecosystems. Lastly, it intends to popularise the use of agroforestry techniques in agricultural and market-gardening activities with a view to making the local community more settled.
The project plans to support the target households in building their capacity through training in reforestation, agroforestry, market gardening, fish farming and pig rearing, as well as to improve their project management skills.
This community-based approach is an asset in terms of household ownership of the project. It encourages the development of sustainable solutions to the poverty and food insecurity facing the region's population.
