Aquaverde worked with the Surui indigenous people’s Metareilá association to promote forest recovery with 4,000 Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) seedlings in degraded areas and on the farmland of Surui families in the Sete de Setembro indigenous territory.

The "Reforestation and Brazil nuts" project helped to tackle the problem of deforestation in Amazonia. The Brazil nut (or Amazon nut) is one of the main products extracted by the Paiter Surui people. It generates income for families and is of utmost importance for biodiversity, as it provides shelter and food for various animal species, in addition to all its other environmental benefits.

By planting Brazil nuts, the Surui people aim to promote biodiversity while strengthening their livelihoods. With the right support, reforestation of indigenous lands by the Surui community is a long-term measure that tends to mobilise the entire local population. It not only helps to reduce the impact of climate change on the environment, but also to establish sustainable production. In addition, reforestation near the villages encourages the return of various animals such as birds, wild boar and armadillos, species that are important to the Surui people's diet and culture.
